Introduction

In our drama production we used the stimulus of the young boy Aylan Kurdi and how it had a social, cultural and historical effects it had. Aylan Kurdi was a three year old Syrian who was forced out of his own country due to the growing power of ISIS in Syria. Aylan Kurdi’s family fled in a plastic inflatable boat, which was making a dangerous journey across the Mediterranean sea.The plastic boat capsized and the family was washed ashore on a Turkish beach. Only the father this horrible incident.

We had been talking about the stigma around migrants and how they were not accepted by people. This showed us a in depth insight of how the migrants felt and the journey they took get be safe. we had seen pictures of the marshals carrying aylan kurdi away, we had seen news paper article talking about how aylan kurdi and his mum and brother and that is why we kept this idea of the pain and death us to put  empathies on how the migrants felt.

Because of this in our performance we decided to use the central question “when home becomes unsafe were can you call home”. we created this central question because we thought about  how the immigrants had to suddenly pick there stuff up and flee so that they were safe, because of this we wanted to see how the progression of the immigrants and how they tryed too find some place to call home.

from this we could have created a scenario were the migrant were settled down into a new home, but the stess of having to move and the media portraying them in a negative way, makes them feel more and more isolated causing them to feel like they cant accept there place they are living as home.one of the pros for this scenario could be that we could show how the media and the people wouldn’t want the migrants in their country. one of the cons for this scenario would be the fact that we wouldn’t be able to fully understand why they left there form country and what affects it had on them. Another pro would be that we could see how they couldn’t call anywhere home.

Item 1

In our performance we decided to use the situation of  a family and how the son was remembering(the words “I remember” being a keyword) how his dad was arguing to his wife about how they weren’t going to leave even though they weren’t safe, the scene later turns into the mum and dad protecting there child from the bombs and gun shots , the son and the dad survive but the mum dies. the son the goes on to remember how him and his father made a treacherous journey towards somewhere safe, when they get there they finally find a home but then it symbolically crumbles in there hands. This idea came from the central question, which made us think about how the journey was for the migrants and how they had to struggle to find a home.We discarded a scenario were the migrants selling stuff illegally on the streets to make money, the reason why we didn’t choose this as one of the scene’s was because it wouldn’t really portray how the migrants in our scene try to find a home, it also wouldn’t make sense due to our central question.

In our rehearsed improvisation we used 4 characters, 3 of which are main characters:                                       . Mum,Dad,son and a sick migrant

We wanted the mother figure to feel more of a sense of safety towards herself and towards her family. However the father figure was more towards keeping all of his family’s possessions safe than his family. In our production I played two people the sick migrant and the mum. I based the sick  migrant character on the real Syrian migrants who also got sick travelling as they had no health care. When I played the mother figure I was challenge because I wanted to show how all the migrants felt towards their family and how they just wanted them to be safe.To play the sick migrant I had to show to he felt emotionally and physically drained so I was constantly griping my chest and wincing to show pain , I also was coughing. To play the mother figure I had to show fear of dying and anger which is kept back so I was not listening to what the father was saying and when he was shouting at me I kept head rest on my two fingers to show anguish.

We used improvisation in our first scene so that the it always was flowing and so there was awkward silences. this made our scene come across perfectly.our whole production show our central question well because we had key scenes  which revolved around the felling home, and I think that our last scene showed to a full extent our central question.

item 2

.In my script the situation I decided  to enter the father mind to explore his mental state and see how it was taking a tole on his life. To show this i started the scene with the father and son waiting in the immigration office , when the father suddenly drops and everything goes black the room lights up and he is standing there with the figure of his wife in the distance calling out to him wanting him to come back home, he do’s not believe that it is real. The father then comes back to the real world and his son is there waiting by his side.Later the son and the father are walking home when he faints again and he his back there still shackled to the wall, his wife tells him to let her go and leave all the thoughts and regrets he had on not leaving early enough, letting his wife die, his wife says her goodbyes and tells him to look after their son then she just disappears leaving a now conscience father laying on the street with his son next to him. I created this idea to be a continuation from my previous scene with my group, i wanted to show how the the the dad would still be tied to his home even though there was no remains of it. when people loving something they will always remember it so that is why i add the power of memory into it showing the complex situation with someone who has gone through massive stress or trauma.I wanted to add a scene with the father and the son sitting at the moms grave and the the dad was talking about how he was to blame for all of this, but I discarded this because I didn’t  think that it would portray my central question which is  “when home becomes unsafe were can you call home”.

.In my script there was three characters that I used, all three are connected because they are a family. the characters were:.the father, the figure(mother),the son                                                                                                                            the father character was a male character who was at first adamant about leaving home because this was his family home, everything that he knew and loved was in his home country, but he then regretted it because his home was destroyed and he lost his wife because of the war that was going on.this was an important to show the fathers regret because it made it easier show that he could forgive himself.                                                                                             the figure(mother) was a female character who had died in the first performance, due to the father not allowing them to leave, but in the script that i wrote she was more of an image of incarnate that the father had created in his mind making her more of a way to show that the father had not moved on.                                                                                 the son was male character of about the age of 8-9 year. the son in my script was a bit worried about what was happening to his son and wanted to know what was wrong. He had not been told in full detailed what was going on so he was a little naive to the situation. I developed these characters so that they were a more advanced versions of themselves in the original performance, in a sense that they had a different outlook on there situation like the dad who has in my script forgiven himself for anything that thought he may have caused. The father character was based on the loosely based on Aylan Kurdis father(Abdullah kurdi) who made the the journey with his family over the Mediterranean sea to escape syria. The son was based upon Aylan Kurdi although he was a bit older.the mother was based on Abdullah Kurdi’s wife.

.I used improvisation in my scene so that my script was able to flow. it being able to flow aloud me to make sure there was no parts where a line or a stage direction didn’t make sense.I think that my script was good a showing my central question because I was able to show that even though you leave the home you had emotional and mental ties to you will always remember it.i order to strengthen the communication I had in my script I think I should have shown how leaving had a effect on the son and not just focus on the father.

Item 3

For my design I decided to draw a prop that would be used in my production from my script. The prop I choose to design was the chains from my script. The chains that I designed were thick so that it was able to restrain the father , the chains were also entwined  .The reason I chose this design idea was that I wanted to communicate how the father still had a strong unbreakable bond to his life that he left behind. There is a symbolic meaning behind the chains. The chains represent everything that the father lest behind, having them tied the father makes this thought become stronger .

comparative

In this essay I will be exploring how power is portrayed in two poems,War photographer-Carol Ann Duffy and Remains-Simon Armitage . the main point in the poem Remains is guilt which  is shown through the speaker who is reminiscing about how he killed a man on the streets this has repercussions that i will analyse in this essay . similarly in the poem war photographer we can see the point of guilt through the photographer who takes pictures of people in war which later on makes him understand the effects of war. power can be seen in different ways thought each poem.

In the poem  Remains there is power which  is shown through fear. This is shown when the speaker says ” He’s here in my head when I close my eyes” ,this shows the power of fear because the officer who killed the man still thinks about the situation. The phrase in my head shows that the soldier is constantly reminded about the situation, it could also mean that the solider is being haunted by the innocent man’s  soul which is tormenting his mind. the words when I close my eyes  shows that the solider is even haunted by the killing when he is sleeping showing that the killing had an everlasting effect on him.The power of fear makes the guard into a shell of an human being. The quote gives us an image of a man who is slowly becoming crazy always thinking about the same thing making less and sane.

However in war photographer the power of memory is shown through the quote “He remembers the cries of this man’s wife”. this shows the power of memory because the photographer is reminiscing about the cries of the woman as she cried about the death of someone close to her. The phrase “he remembers” shows that the man had a quick reminisance about the situation causing him to change his view. also the word “cries” shoes that the wife was going through pain and sorrow which could have mental effects. The quote gives an image of a woman who  is possibly watching a killing  being part of a killing, this makes us think about how the job of being a war photographer is a dangerous job and comes with repercussions.

In remains there is also the power of authority which we can see through the quote ” probably armed possibly not”. this shows that solider was second guessing about the man and didn’t care about if the man was armed or not. By second guessing himself the guard shows us a crack into his persona making us feel that he wasn’t trained for that kinds of quick thinking situations. This shows that the guard was abusing his power of authority. This could represent how the people do not think a situation well and just do what ever they want.

The poem war photographer also have the power of guilt. We can see this when the speaker says”solutions slop in trays beneath his hands, which did not tremble then though seem to now”. the phrase ” did not tremble now though seem to now” shows us that the war photographer was finally realising what  he had been witnessing. The words “solutions slop in trays beneath his hands” shows that the photographer was going through trauma and is showing it physically . The quote gives us a strong image of the photographer standing in a dark room with a picture in his hand shaking at the site of the war torn area in his hands. I think that Carol Ann Duffy wrote this to show us how the struggle of war is even to the people who seem normalised to it.

similarly we can see the in power of memory in remains. In the whole poem of remains there is a lasting effect of memory and guilt. we can see the power of guilt when Simon Armitage writes “pain itself the image of agony”. we know that this power of memory because we know from the quote that the killing itself was brutal then gives the fact it would give the lasting effect on the murderer. The quote gives us a image of  some sort of being that brings paint those it bestows it to. The quote could also mean that every time he thinks over the killing it brings him mental pain.

we can see the power of religion in war photographer. we can see this when Carol Ann Duffy writes “he a priest preparing to intone a mass” this gives us an image of the photographer holding pictures of the wars ready show everyone the massacre and blood  that is shed. This goes well with the quote because in the catholic religion a priest separates the body and blood in communion, the quote compares the photographer to a priest who is ready to show the world the truth behind war. I think that Carol Ann Duffy used religion in the poem because religion sometimes in war religion is the base of the conflict. we can also see the power of death  when we read “all flesh is glass”. this gives us an image of dead bodies lying around a worn torn area, which have been left there decay making them slowly becoming one with the soil and ground.the quote could also give us an image of the dead bodies on the ground, and because the wars have been going on for long the people of the city or country don’t bat and eye to the situation around them.

In conclusion  we can see that Both poems show power in their own way. The main point in photographer  is the fact that the war is starting to become normal and the photographer is slowly starting to realise that everything that is going on around him is having an effect on him showing him the repercussions of being a war photographer. However the main points in Remains is the point of the guard who is having mental effects which start  to make him lean towards drinking and drugs to help him forget the situation.

If i was to create a frozen depiction using the salute scene i would have the Lear`s comrades  standing in a line while Lear would be walking around them while Lear would walk around them while saluting and talkin about his two daughters. How is Mumbai presented through the perspective of Abdul, Asha and Sunil

This essay will be based on the perspectives of three main characters Abdul, Asha and Sunil of the city Mumbai. All three of the characters live in Annawadi which is based in Mumbai next to the international airport. the characters all have a different perspective on Annawadi and the world because they are on different levels of roles in the slum. Abdul is a rubbish trader who buys from the scavengers and sells the rubbish off to other buyers, he runs his business from hi house. Asha is the unofficial slumlord of Annawadi  which means she has to look at the problems that are brought up by the  people of Annawadi. Asha dosent take things lightly and sees everything as a oppurtunity to make money. finally there is Sunil who is a rubbish scavenger who sells his rubbish to Abdul.

The first person we are introduced to is Abdul.we know abdul as a person who buys rubbish of scavengers and sell it for more to factorys or seperate buyers.  A quote which shows how abdul feels about annawadi and the world is” the better i know you the more i will dislike you and the more you will dislike me”,.this quote gives us a vision on how abdul sees his day to day life.we get an image that abdul dosent want to socialize with people from annawadi because they might feel like abdul and his family were slowly get there way out of the slums. Also the people in Annawadi might have an attitude towards everyone and set them up with the police like we see when abdul and his family were wrongly accused of burning the one leg. Also this could mean that the peolpe in Annawadi dont communicate to each other.

the second quote to show Abduls perspective is “this was the gentle going hour in which Abdul hated Annawadi least”. this quote shows us that Annawadi was a place in which you did not want to be in, we also get an idea that the only time in which the citizens of Annawadi get peace of mind might be early in the morning when everything is still and people arent rush around trying there best to get up in the economic standings. Also this could mean that abdul wakes up early in the morning to have a peace of mind.

The second person that we are introduced to is Asha. we know here as a unofficial slumlord who always sees everything as a chance to make quick money.we see that Asha also gets dirty money from the government. a quote that shows how aha sees the world and Annawadi would be ” she had by now seen past the obvious truth that Mumbai was a hive of hope and ambition”. this could show Asha perspective because it shows that Asha has an insite into the truth behind Mumbai`s government and all the money and jobs circling through Mumbai. also this could mean that Asha also could be a high leader in the mumbai government.

the second quote to show how Asha`s perspective on Mumbai and the world would be ” as Asha arrived home from her teaching job one afternoon her step didn’t quicken when she saw supplicants lined up against the wall of her hut”. This can show us that Asha does not look forward to going home and seeing the people standing by her house with complaints because she might feel like that it was a waste of time.she could feel that she is to high up in annawadi to be treated like someone who you tell your problems to. we also see that Asha also takes the piss when it comes to the facts that she is faced with.

the third and final person we are introduced to is sunil who we know is a scavenger.Sunil has a mixed perspectives on Mumbai and the world.A quote to Sunil`s perspective is ” he knew why he and the other children recevied ice cream only when newspaper photographers come to visit”.This shows how the orphanages in Annawadi are showing themselves as something to be proud of even though they are secretly different behind closed doors. Also this could show that they wanted the photographers to show the world that Annawadi is a good place.

the second quote to show sunil`s perspective is ” though sunil was not an orphan he understood that phrases like AIDS orphan”. this could mean that Sunil knows that the orphanage dosent whant him because he is described as a AIDS orphan which could mean that they see him as a dieases. also it could mean that in places like Annawadi even though though they are poor them selves they do not accept children who are orphans.

In conclusion we can see that the three characters have different perspectives on the world and Annawadi. we can see that abdul thinks that all the people in Annawadi are negative and dosent want to associate himself with them. Asha sees everything as a opportunity to make money, And sunil understands everthing that goes on his community to get a better view on the world.

objectives and motivations

The role of the foreman is to be a sub manager in the situation.as the foreman in the scene he is responsible of the well-being of his workforce. The foreman is in charge while the accident happens and he is scared of being caught out by his enforcers. The objective of the character was to hide the dead body, the motivation for this was that he did not want to get into trouble with the head enforcer. If I was to perform as the foreman i would be assertive to my surroundings , I would also be quick and make sure that no one was watching.

.This image shows a dead solider in the trenches lying there while his comrades look on.                                                                                                                                                  .the image might communicate how the life on the front-line was dangerous. it could also show how you can go into the war with the fear of not returning.                                                                                                         .I think that this image compliments our scene because our scene was German soldiers dead in the trenches .the image creates a sad and depressing mood because it shows death.

split scene

In our performance we wanted the audience to think about the way woman had to live life while their husbands were at war.the scene that we created using split scene was shown in two scenes the first scene was the men in battle, one of the men gets shot and the other men flee. The second scene was of the woman at home doing daily activities such as taking care of their children and  cleaning. We also added in a scene were one of the women were writing a letter to their husband who was in war.putting these set of actions together enabled us compare the reality of life during world war one .one of the ways we were able to show this was when one of the  soldiers were shot and his comrades left him for dead. using this action were able to show that even though it was made out to seem that the soldiers were fully trained that there was still danger lurking in the midst.also the scene were one of the ladies was writing a note showed how much the familys of the soliders were still keeping them in their hearts even though they were gone to serve their country.the convention of split scene allowed us to show the audience the emotional and physical experiences of the war.

Kafka Essay

in this essay i will be comparing the similarities and differences of the novella written by franz kafka and the short film directed by chris swanton. This essay will show how death is presented.the novella was written by franz kafka who is now an icon of twentieth century literature. He went to Charles ferdinand university were he was going to studying chemistry but dropped that and studied law instead. In 1913 kafka went to a sanatorium in Italy to revive his failing health.soon after he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. On June 3 1924 unable to eat because of the pain kafka starved to death.before he died kafka asked max broad to destroy all of his writings after his death but broad didn’t comply with his wishes.over the course of 1920s and 30s kafkas work were published and translated instantly becoming landmarks of twentieth century literature. His emphasis on the absurdity of existence the alienating experienced of modern life and the cruelty.

In both of the film and the novella gregor death is presented as a relief to gregor.in kafkas version we can see this when kafka states “the rotten apple in his back and the inflamed surrounding area ,entirely covered with dust he hardly noticed”. This quotation shows that while alive he has felt excruciating pain.the word inflamed suggests that the pain gregor felt is a burning sensation .also the family tries to accept gregor but the acceptance his bound up with the alienation the family feels because they are not able to socialise  with the outside world due to gregors current state.gregor becomes more and more dehumanised as his family start to accept him as a beetle rather than gregor there son and older brother.the family could also feel dehumanised because they are start to do less of what they normally do which makes crack and then start to reject gregor. He uses imagery to show the extent of gregor injuries.the pain that gregor felt could be referring back to the actual life of kafka because he went through pain when his dieing of turburculosis. In swantons version we can see this when gregor is taking his last breath and the dust ball was moving when he was dieing which resembles if he died peace full or not .this detail communicates that his death was not in vain but that gregor wanted to die to stop all the pain that he was going through like the apple in his back and his family neglecting him.the appearance of gregor shows that he was growing old because his she’ll was all white and dusty.the dust ball resembles the the struggle of gregor because the dust ball was moving fast which represent gregor starting his situation and started moving slowly and and kept on stoping and starting which represents the end of gregors life .therefore in both versions of metamorphosis death is presented as a relief to gregor.

In both versions of metamorphosis gregor death is presented as a relief to his family.in kafkas version we can see this when kafka states “then all three left the apartment together something they had not done for months now”.this quotation communicates the relief of stress in the samsa family.this statement shows us the first time that the samsa family had left there apartment since the situation with gregor. relief is shown because they finally get to go out and not be stressed about gregor. also this shows relief in the  family because this happened start after gregor died(in beetle form), which they would naturally be mourning for but they were instantly start their normal life.in swantons versions we can see family relief when grete slams the door behind gregor before he was about to die.as she closes the door she huffs a sigh of relief and says finally.the characterisation of greet shows that she wanted to get rid of gregor forever to eliminate the stress.therefore in both versions of metamorphosis death is presented as a relief to the samsa family especially gregors sister grete.

in kafkas version death is presented as painful whereas in swantons version death is presented as peaceful.in kafkas version we can see this when kafka writes” true he had pains throughout his entire body”.this quotation communicates the pain of gregor before he decide to give up his life.it also communicates the feelings of gregor at the time his death was approaching.this statement is one of the few lines that show us how gregor felt at that time and it explains how his body had changed from when he started of his beetle life .whereas in swantons film version we can see death presented as peaceful when gregor saw his family as he was about to die and when he was staying alive for long enough to see the sunrise.

In conclusion I have written that death can be presented in different ways such as a relief.the main similarities and differences are that kafka uses two main themes in the final chapter like relief and and pain.
